Dear Friend,

Next month I will be hosting a Small Business Contracting Seminar in Williamsport, designed to give our local business owners the skills and resources they need to compete for federal contracts.  At the March 15th event, business owners will learn how to register their businesses with appropriate agencies, search for bidding opportunities and see what resources and organizations are available to help guide them through the process.  Information on how to RSVP for this event is at the end of this newsletter.

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and I am committed to doing everything I can to help them thrive.  There are a great deal of government resources available to our small business owners, and I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of these resources for you.

o   US Small Business Administration (SBA): The SBA is a federal agency, designed to provide Americans with information on how to start, grow, and maintain their small business.  The SBA sponsors numerous loan and grant programs, training initiatives, investment opportunities, assistance programs, technology programs, and advocacy services.  SBA's web address is http://www.sba.gov/index.html , or you can contact the Pennsylvania regional office in Philadelphia at (610) 382-3062.

o   USA.gov: USA.gov is the US government's official web portal.  The site is designed to be a "one-stop-shop" for links and information to the federal government's vast network of agencies and programs.  Their "Businesses and Nonprofits" page contains links to help you find tools to run your business, such as financial assistance, laws and regulations, tax guides, and business planning.  The web address for this page is http://www.usa.gov/Business/Business_Gateway.shtml

o   Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers (SBDC): SBDCs provide no-cost consulting services to entrepreneurs and small business owners.  Their services cover a range of topics including accounting, marketing and advertising, regulatory assistance, legal issues, financing, and strategic planning.  Their web address is http://www.pasbdc.org/index/default.asp.  Local SBDC offices are located in:

oThe University of Scranton, 411-413 Quincy Avenue, Scranton, PA.  (800) 829-7232, www.scrantonsbdc.com

oBucknell University, 112 Dana Engineering Building, Lewisburg, www.bucknell.edu/sbdc

o   Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED): The DCED is a state agency designed to foster opportunities for Pennsylvania businesses and communities to succeed in our global economy.  The DCED can provide small business owners with information on starting a business, applying for funding, taxes, technology investment, and expanding into international markets.  Their web address is http://www.newpa.com/index.aspx, or you can contact their main office in Harrisburg at (866) 466-3972.

As always, my office staff is also available to help connect small business owners with the resources they need to help their businesses thrive.  If you need assistance, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my Clarks Summit office toll-free at (866) 846-8124.

The Small Business Contracting Seminar will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Klump Academic Center Auditorium at The Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport on March 15. The event is free and open to the public. If you plan on attending, please contact Lee LaQuintano at (866) 846-8124.
